Palma de Majorca - 1996

Now we're on vacation

The second destination on my 8th grade Spanish class trip to Spain. Palma de Majorca is a European vacation desintation and it really shone. The crystal clear waters and beauftiful scenery were lasting impressions.

We took an overnight ferry to the Mediterranean Island of Majorca. Yes, this is the shot I got of our cabin. What am I going to waste another shot on a room full of beds? There was a dico-tech on the ship. It was loud and dark with bright flashing lights, and I remember some talk about Spanish girls who were interested in kissing American boys. So I got the heck out of there and went to bed early in said cabin.

We stayed in a hotel right on the water with beautiful views of the seas. The water was startlingly clear and we swam at the beach just below our balcony. There were rock outcroppings we jumped from into the water. I grazed the bottom and got an Urchin spike stuck in my foot.

The next day we boarded a bus for some sight seeing. The terrain was strikingly arid for a place so close to the sea.

This is Bellver Castle which overlooks the dense urban center of Palma. The sun was beating strongly that afternoon which made the old fort seem more desolate and desert like. The blue ribbon on the tower was in honor of a hostage who was released but I don't have any more details about it. There were tropical birds nesting in the castle walls.

After that we toured the Palma Cathedral which is a very impressive Gothic structure.

I was even impressed by their gaudy candelabra. It was pretty big. Pardon my thumb.

That evening we attended a dinner theatre for which I had absolutely no expextation. I recall passing these roasting chickens and pigs on the way in. This guy with his horse were welcoming everyone. But I had no idea why we were there, I thought it was just another site to see.

I think the fact that I kept taking pictures is a statement on the show's impact. They just kept taking it up a notch. That guy brought his horse inside. Holy moley, there's a monster truck on stage.

There was actually a lot more including a performance by The Drifters, who are a musical group I'd actually heard of. However I lost those photos and a large portion of the next roll due to a camera malfunction not winding the film back into the cannister fully.
