In the final stop before returning to Rome we made port in Naples. A short bus ride south took us to historic Pompeii, which, wow. Go to Pompeii if you get the chance. It is a historic marvel preserved in place. Walking actual streets between actual buildings of an ancient city was striking.

As for Naples itself, the timing of our visit may have given it short shrift. The final stop in a list of impressive cities, and relegated to the afternoon after Pompeii, we made a self-guided walking loop.
